A cop. A journalist. A match made in hell.

Detective Hudson is tired. Tired of his job. Tired of his friends. Just plain tired. The last thing he needs is to be saddled with a reporter who is so filled with enthusiasm she can barely sit still.

Hazel Dale has finally got what she wanted. The crime beat. Unfortunately, it means working alongside the worst human being she has ever met.

A Alphabet Shorts Book 1 eBook AJ Henderson

Detective Hudson has just received some bad news ... for the next few weeks he will have a reported shadowing his every move. The thought behind this is that it will improve what people think about their police department. Hudson thinks differently .... especially when he meets his own personal reporter.

Hazel Dale is cute, she's bouncy, eager to prove herself ... and she giggles when nervous. Hudson has a feeling that she's nervous ... a lot.

He's rude, doesn't want to be babysitting and he's just about the worst human being she has ever met.

First call is to investigate a suicide. He warns her not to throw up at that crime scene..or else! She wants booties for her feet and gloves for her hands. He wants her to be quiet, walk where he walks and above all else .. do not touch anything.

Hudson is just about to write this off as a suicide when he gets a call from a woman claiming to have further information ... she's a married lady who had an affair with the deceased.

For a very short story (42 pages) it was packed with substantial writing and terrific characters. I loved how Hudson and Dale play off each other. Lots of sarcasm, lots of one-liners and lots of raised eyebrows. The story premise is a good one and it is well -written with no fluff getting in the way.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this fast, fun read!

A Alphabet Shorts Book 1 eBook AJ Henderson Reviews

This was an excellent book. Very well written, fast paced, great storyline. Had just the right amount of suspense - a "who done it" story. It's was just too short and I wanted it to continue.
Kept my interest from the first. Older police detective paired up with fairly new lifestyles reporter who is trying to get ahead. A case brings them closer to understanding each other.
I enjoy Carella's books, so wanted to give this a try. Interesting to learn of how short stories bridge the time to recuperate from the novels. I have a rule nothing less than 100 pages, to read or buy. This was an exception. Good plot, the story flowed well. Love the reporter, she added a nice touch. Looking forward to the next one
First in A.J.HENDERSON'S ALPHABET SHORTS BOOK, I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO READ
THIS THOUGHTFULLY WRITTEN MYSTERy. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT 25
SHORT BOOKS AS I KNOW YOU WILL TOO.
PLEASE EXCUSE THE USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS BUT MY EYESIGHT IS NOT WHAT IT WAS AND THE LARGE LETTERS HELP ME TO WRITE.

This book is about Detective Frank Hudson and Hazel Dale. Hudson is a hard nosed cop, Hazel Dale is is reporter for the Cliffmore Sun newspaper. Hazel has been assigned to shadow this Detective for a few weeks. First case is a possible suicide. As they investigate, things get start to get complicated. Can Frank figure out who committed the crime? Does Hazel help or harm the investigation? Read this short story to find out. I read a complimentary ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this intro to a new short series. Most shorts don't have enough story time to weave in an ample amount of character development, but this one was the perfect balance. I actually am waiting to see where this unlikely pair is thrust next, which is not something I have found true with previous shorts I've read. Thank you (unnamed amazing author) for publishing under a pseudonym and finding this as a way to prevent writers block between your other works.
Unlike a lot of reviewers, I like short stories. They are great to introduce you to new (to you!) authors and characters, so you get a taste of what that author will be offering you in later work. I truly enjoyed the style presented here. Frank Hudson is an aging cop who doesn't want to be saddled with a giggling reporter he'll have to watch out for for the next couple of weeks while he tries to get his job done. And Hazel Dale thinks Frank Hudson is a rotten example of a human being, but she can put up with him to get her chance to do police reporting. She doesn't follow instructions and he doesn't have even the bare-bones level of technology she expects from cop shows and books. Oh, yeah. While the two of them are feeling each other out (for weak spots?) the case moves forward. Clues come to light (one thanks to Dale) and finally, the case is solved. The writing is sparse when it comes to the description of places or people, but the character delineation is superb in the two main characters. Also, the plot was fairly good with nice twists and turns to keep you guessing, so for a short story. it was a tightly packed bag full of delights. I am looking forward to further adventures with these two unlikely partners (perhaps at least 25 of them?). I have signed up for the A. J. Carella starter set because I liked this story so well. Thank you, A.J.!
