Can she overcome all odds?

Fourteen year old Karina dares to defy her small town upbringing. With drive and ambition beyond her years, young Karina is bent on becoming the social advocate for witches and others with paranormal gifts. But, that's not all Karina longs for! With hopes of attending Tulane University, Karina aims to one day work at the UN and spark a change that will have a lasting impact in not only her small corner of the world, but on a global level. Fighting for human rights for witches and warlocks promises to change everything.

A chance encounter with a mysterious and troubled gambler leads to a friendship that blurs the lines between right and wrong. Their bond will be unbreakable if they can move past their differences and the boy Karina left behind doesn't complicate matters further.

This new world that Karina finds herself in will challenge her more than anything ever has before. As her new friend, Jules, struggles to control his powers, Karina is confronted with new and unfamiliar emotions. Desperate to find a balance between love, tolerance, and acceptance, Karina is torn between two worlds and two very different men in her life. With the witch population increasing at an incredible pace and what once was normal, quickly transforming into something else, no amount of magical powers or friends in high places will be able to help her. Hard lessons will have to be learned, if Karina can muster up the strength and the courage to forge on and move past the insurmountable obstacles that continue to thwart her efforts.

Does Karina have all the skills necessary to beat the odds and grasp that which she needs so desperately?

I loved the book i totally was reading to find out if Jules and Katrina ever realllly kissed :) hope the next book has a bit more of them happily together like it would say her cheeks turn red i want mine to turn red :) I thought highly of the book but didn't have any lol moments or crying or emotion while reading it. Some books I get so embarrassed or sad that I cry or laugh. There were some almost moments. Also in the beginning it was kind of hard to follow some things like if time had passed or if she was just thinking if something in the future. Also how did Jules afford his apartment?? Haha all that being said I will read the next one and really liked the story line of this book.

Shifting Identity The MagicKeepers Series edition by Zhu Hsia Jasmine Bowen Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

This is a very good book. It is a young adult book but I think that any one who enjoys this kind of book will enjoy this one. There are strong characters faced with real problems. It has magic, friendships and love. So grab you a copy and enjoy reading.
While this was not what I was expecting. It is a very well written story. The blurb was that it was a paranormal romance. So I was expecting more of a non-traditional setting. However the story was good and the underlying theme of social inequality did point out some of our own current problems in society. This story is definitely one that I would recommend to my friends who are interested in a 'soft' romance with an urban flair. I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Giving this one star is generous. The characters are sketchy at best. The plot is barely "alright" and the author employs this misspelling of ALL RIGHT throughout the selection. The author alludes to the persecution of witches without giving concrete examples (until the end--and still, general, lacking detail). The threat against them is unclear and fails to add any dramatic tension. Long spans of time pass without adequate explanation. The cover art and description "hoaxed" me into downloading this ebook (See author's bio for reference). I'm glad that I didn't spend money on it. This writer needs a serious editor. With this bland, beige, sad read, I'll skip the sequels. Humph!
I agree that this book is well worth the read. It does start off very slow and seems to drudge on but it builds the story well and then you really get into it. The main character Karina is lost in her own kind of world where what she wants seems to be there but yet so far away. What she wants is to interpret for the ones tht are defenseless against the growing population of haters to the also growing population of deformed witches. When her high school sweet heart and first love tried to talk her out of her dreams she starts to realize that sometimes life has a way of telling you where to go.reccomended for ages 12 and up very clean read!
The story is about a teen, Karina who wishes to work at UN to fight for the rights of witches who are discrimated against. She ends up going to the states to study and meets a young man, Jules who has undeveloped powers.
The story took a bit to take off as the beginning of the book is the back story of Karina. It was a little slow but I stuck with it. Im glad I did. In the end i was rooting for Karina to succeed and wanting to know more about Jules. This is a good start to what could be a great series. Im looking forward to the next in this series to watch the characters grow and how they face not only the constant hate/discrimination due to his "race", but his growing and dangerous powers. With the next book im hoping to learn more about the Jules and his past.
The main character, Karina from Canada speaks at least English and French. Jules apparently from New Orleans, USA only speaks French. How is it An American born in this country doesn't speak English, even in New Orleans they speak English. It was cute almost whimsical but I won't be finishing the series. This book stopped at a good place no real serious cliffhanger to try to resolve. It was worth the read but to me Not worth continuing.
I received this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review via LibraryThing.
The first installment in Jasmine Bowen and Zhu Hsia’s The Magickeeper Series, Shifting Identity is an easy and short read. The reader suddenly finds themselves behind the perspective of Karina Humpries, an intellectually and linguistically gifted girl (with an admittedly unfortunate last name) who will do anything to see her dreams realized. There’s no space for long back stories, world building, or serious character development here, the authors simply jump right into the good stuff.
In the first couple chapters, Karina has devised a clever rouse to be able to achieve her dreams. She’s only fourteen when she concocts her plan, sixteen when she makes it happen. She wishes to move to New Orleans and get into Tulane University where she will be able to study human rights and linguistics in the hopes of becoming a translator for the U.N. Her life on a farm in small-town Canada will not make this happen.
Once Karina has been settled into New Orleans, managing to get into a U.S. high school (all part of her plan), the reader apparently skips forward a year to the perspective of Jules Valentine, a wizard with a very complicated backstory that results in emotional baggage and a lot of gambling. Besides his nice guy personality and the fact that he dresses as a gentleman, there really is nothing very attractive about Jules.
But that doesn’t keep Karina and Jules from developing a close friendship that eventually results in some romantic sentiments.
This story set a fast pace to seemingly nowhere. Nothing really happens in this novel. Normally, I would assume that this is simply meant as an introduction to the characters but if that’s really the case, it’s half-assed. The world building is pretty nonexistent, the characters aren’t even given a description of what they look like, let alone any real character development. I kept waiting for Karina to do something big or for something to happen with Jules’ magic. I assume this happens in later installments in the series but I’m really not hooked enough to pick up a second novel.
2 stars—After all, it was an easy read with lots of potential.
I loved the book i totally was reading to find out if Jules and Katrina ever realllly kissed ) hope the next book has a bit more of them happily together like it would say her cheeks turn red i want mine to turn red ) I thought highly of the book but didn't have any lol moments or crying or emotion while reading it.
